The goal of this project is to introduce the fundamental concepts and applications of computer science to children 14 years old and under.
Programming helps develop logical thinking skills. It teaches the nature of cause and effect relationships. It also contributes to having a positive effect on the development of curiosity and success in school. This project would allow children not only to develop skills but to see immediate results in a novel and exciting context.
"Mission Zero" will give children the chance to have their code run on the International Space Station (ISS)). Teams will write a simple program to display a message and humidity reading on an Astro Pi computer, for the
astronauts to see as they go about their daily tasks on the ISS.
No special hardware or prior coding skills are
needed, and all participants who follow the challenge
rules are guaranteed to have their programs run in space.
The learning opportunity
Children will learn about the Astro Pi unit and how to control it, including how to:
o Display messages and colours
o Create images
o Measure humidity using a Sense HAT
o Use basic programming constructs to create simple programs
