The Forest Hackathon

The Forest School

Description The Forest School held its very first hackathon coordinated by Year 10 students on the 2nd of July. After this huge success - we have decided to run a second one in October. The Hackathon will bring together Year 9 and 10 students for half a day (250 minutes) of creativity and innovation.
Students will make websites and learn or show their skills in html, css and JavaScript. During the event, Participants will be divided into three teams: Yellow, Blue, and White. Yellow team will be taught about coding languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, enabling students to create their very own website; while Blue team will be working on innovative projects and the White team will enter a competition to win some vouchers.
The workshops will be led by Year 11 students, with approximately 30 participants, learnt the basics of web development and how websites on the Internet are created and the basis of all websites. on the World Wide Web. At the end of the event, judges will be invited to give feedback on the students' work. We combined innovation, creativity, and enjoyment into one brilliant event that exceeded our furthest expectations.

The even in July was such a huge success with no money/no budget. The volunteers sourced their own packet of crisps and drink for each student. The teacher paid for the prizes out of her own pocket. We would love to run more events like this - giving (especially our Disadvantaged students) the opportunity to experience the wonderful programming community and how we all support each other. The aim for the next hackathon will focus on Python or other high level languages.
