After school coding club

Description Aim is to teach children problem solving skills, spacial awareness and directions, and planning skills through coding, using technology and software such as Beebots, Probots, Spheros, Just2Easy, Scratch and Mircobits.

We plan to run a block of 12 × 1 hour after school club sessions in Term 1, so that pupils can stay on after school and enjoy exploring these maths and stem skills in a fun and safe way, especially in the darker autum term, when they wouldn't be able to play outdoors as much.

This club would also help us fill a huge gap in our community as we are an Irish medium school. The Irish language is a minority language here in Northern Ireland, and most families do not speak Irish fluently, therefore once children go home after 3pm, the majority of pupils will not have access to the language again until they return to school the following day, whereas this after school club could give those pupils the opportunity to spend another hour immersed and experiencing the language in a structured way, whilst having fun and also learning.

Our target group would be aged 8 - 12 year olds, but with this funding, we'd actually be able to also provide availability for our 4 - 8 year old foundation stage pupils too.
