Meet and Code Event
St. Patrick's Primary School, Newry
Description
This event will empower these children with digital skills especially the underserved, underrepresented and underprivileged, fostering tomorrow's digital leaders.
The goals for the event include skill development, confidence building, collaboration and communication, creativity and innovation, diversity and inclusion and finally, fun and engagement.
This will give Primary 5 and Primary 7 students a basics understanding of coding and give them the opportunity to take part in a number of activities including digital stories, games, and animations.
This will also allow teachers and classroom assistants to learn from the facilitator. They will be be able to view the basics of coding so that they can facilitate further workshops and lessons, expanding and building on the children's new found knowledge and understanding.
The event will use Scratch which will allow the children to create digital stories, games and animations. This will encourage critical thinking, problem solving, communication and digital literacy.
The instructors will give demonstrations and model how to use coding via step by step instructions. Interactive coding experiences will provide the students with the opportunity to practice what they have been shown and try themselves. Students will also be able to work together and assist one another providing feedback and ideas to incorporate. More experienced learners will also have the opportunity to assist the instructor to enhance and further their skillset.
These group will include children from low income households who have disadvantaged economic backgrounds and are from socially deprived neighbourhoods. These children have limited access to IT devices outside school. The groups will also include children with special needs.
Children will have access to 1 device per child.
