Omni robot engineering and coding
Lewis girls' School
Description
We are an all-girls school in the Welsh valley just outside of Caerphilly in South Wales. We serve a deprived area called Ystrad Mynach and its surroundings and have an average 28% of pupils eligible for free school meals. We would like to apply for funding to purchase equipment that can be used to design, build and programme an ‘omni wheel’ robot – including all parts required for the drive train assembly.
The components that we would like to purchase would enable us to build a new type of robot for entry into competitions. The event/type of robot would be special as we do not have the equipment needed to make this type of robot although we the girls have seen this type of robot in use at the Amazon warehouse and Lego stock control warehouses in videos during lessons. We would then have the same type of robot drivetrain as they have seen in these videos so they would be able to build and code them in a similar way. The parts needed for this are 4 omni wheels, 4 motors and gear boxes, a battery and control modules.
The goal of the club will be to inspire more of our pupils (girls) into the field of engineering and robotics/programming. Both our STEM club as well as the robotics club are open to all year groups aged 11 -18. The final goal would be to enter the robot into national competitions and inspire/spark an interest in future learning in these STEM areas.
This activity would run in an after-school STEM robot club and enable us to then enter robotics companions in the future. We already have some resources for building however this omni system would be new to us. We deliver the robotics club in person every week (the STEM club also makes use of Lego robots and runs on another night). We already have a computer for the programming of the robot and make use of online portfolios to document what pupils do for when they enter competitions.
