Cedar Class Coding Champions!

Pakeman Primary School PTA

Description Pakeman Primary school Parent Teacher Association (registered Charity No- 1114448) supports the children and their families at Pakeman Primary School by trying to organise community events and raising money for special projects such as this one.

Pakeman Primary School has 320 pupils and is situated just off the Holloway Road in the Borough of Islington and sits in one of the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods within London as defined by the Index of Multiple Deprivation - Trust for London
The school has twice the average rate of Free School Meals (55%) and has three times the national average of pupils who have English as an additional language (63%) and who derive from a BAME background (82%).
These have clearly been identified as underrepresented groups in STEM careers and we are keen to take steps to redress this however we need your help in the form of funding as without this these special events cannot take place.
Our Meet and Code events are intended to create a buzz of excitement about STEM and coding as well as trying to improve the physical activity of our children. The sessions will be used to further learning in and out of the classroom and findings/data will be shared at a whole school assembly where students can share their experiences with the rest of the school community including parents. The events will also feature in our weekly newsletter and online.
The plan is to have 1 event for each of the classes in Year 3/4 so the whole year group can be part of the project – each one to consist of 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon so that the children can truly immerse themselves and be challenged to develop their coding skills.
The aim is to create a simple fitness tracker that counts steps and displays the total on the Micro LED screen. The children will learn;
• Basic programming concepts (variables, loops, conditionals)
• Using sensors and input devices
• Data collection and display
• Physical activity and fitness awareness
We would like all the children to be involved as we consider them all to be underserved and underrepresented in this area given the demographic of where they live and the multiple barriers that they face in accessing things like technology at home, extra curricular activities and STEM opportunities outside of school.
This project encourages children to be physically active while learning to code, making it a fun and healthy way to engage with technology.
