Digital Making Group

Lapwing Education

Description Lapwing Education was founded in 2010 as an alternative education provider focused on delivering bespoke 1:1, 2:1 and small group provision to young people with complex additional needs.

Lapwing’s mission is to deliver outstanding education and support which will positively impact the life chances of the hardest to reach young people across East Anglia.

Our ethos is to put a young person’s needs, interests and aspirations at the heart of the work we do. We are committed to the holistic development of young people so they can thrive personally and professionally.

Digital making is one of Lapwings small groups and provides an exciting and creative way to explore the world of technology. With the advancement of affordable and user-friendly devices such as the BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi, digital making is accessible to people of all ages and skill levels. A weekly digital making group (continuing in September) provides a supportive and collaborative environment for students to explore and experiment with these technologies.

The objectives of the weekly digital making group are as follows:
• To provide a supportive and collaborative environment for students to explore digital making using BBC micro:bits and Raspberry Pis.
• To introduce students to the basics of programming, electronics, and physical computing.
• To encourage students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• To foster creativity and innovation through hands-on activities.
• To build a community of digital makers who can share their knowledge and experiences with each other.

The weekly digital making group meets for 3 hours each week. The group will consist of students who are interested in learning and experimenting with digital making using BBC micro:bits and Raspberry Pis.

Each session includes the following components:
• Introduction and icebreaker activities to encourage students to get to know each other and build a sense of community.
• Demonstration and explanation of a digital making concept or project by the facilitator.
• Hands-on activities where students will work individually or in small groups to explore and experiment with digital making concepts and projects using BBC micro:bits and Raspberry Pis.
• Show and tell, where students will have the opportunity to share their projects and experiences with the group.
• Reflection and feedback, where students will reflect on what they learned and provide feedback to the facilitator and other group members.
