Physical Coding Day 24

Lace Hill Academy PTA

Description This event will teach the basics and introductions to coding. Algorithms, inputs, outputs, sequence, selection, problem solving. We will be using parsons problems, scenarios and the use of storytelling to engage the children. We will start with a whole school assembly before each group getting half a day across the 2 days to have a go at the activities. We will run 12 hours of coding altogether. This will then be followed up by a coding club in Autumn 2 where the same materials can be reused and explored further.

This will be a 2 day event in total. Each year group - 3,4,5 & 6 will get half a day (3 hours) worth of physical coding and problem solving.

The session will be split into 4 main sections. Introduction to algorithms - (unplugged).

Each class will then be split into 3 groups of 10/11. Each group will cycle around our physical coding stations.

Station 1 - Micro:Bit
- Input and output, sensors, parsons problems

Station 2 - Intelino
- problem solving, pattern recognition, maths and science cross curricular links.

Station 3 - Sphero Indi
- direction, problem solving, sequence and selection

The goals of this event are to kickstart our revamped computing curriculum. Sparking an interest and curiosity for coding. We are targeting our KS2 children after doing some pupil voice these were the people least engaged and enthused by the subject.

This event is special because it gives the children a chance to handle and use equipment they may not have used before and can see how coding impacts real world scenarios and isn't just on a screen.
