Future-Proofing Youth: Essential Skills for Careers of Tomorrow

World Youth Skills Day, celebrated on July 15th, is a special day for us at Meet and Code as it embodies everything we stand for.

The United Nations General Assembly declared this day in 2014 to shine a spotlight on the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship.

In celebration, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to highlight some of the exciting skills young people can learn at our Meet and Code workshops which started on June 17th and will run until October 31st: 

• Python: The most widely used coding language in the IT world, which is also utilised in data science and web development. Our organizers have access to Python online learning platforms which offer free gamified resources to teach and learn programming.  

• Coding for Climate Action: We offer a Coding for Climate Action learning program for primary and secondary school students. This enables them to learn the basics of computer science and apply their skills to code a mini computer that can serve as an early warning system for natural disasters.  

• Scratch: Students can program interactive stories, games, and animations — and share creations with others in the online community. 

• Snap!: A broadly inviting programming language for kids and adults that’s also a platform for serious study of computer science.

If you are a non-profit organization wishing to participate in Meet and Code, submissions for a €500 grant are still open until September 30th. You can submit event ideas on your specific country page here. 
 
And remember, Meet and Code will host an awards ceremony to honor the most successful event ideas and inspire other NPOs to do the same. This is because digital education is essential for careers of the future. We're looking for the best ideas in the following categories: Girls do IT!, Code for the Planet and Diversity – each is linked to one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Entries open from October 1st until November 10th.
