This three-week coding event aims to inspire young girls (Brownies) to explore the world of coding and technology, encouraging them to believe that *girls can do anything*, including excelling in STEM fields. The event will be aligned with Girlguiding's values, allowing girls to be who they want to be in a safe space.
The event will focus on introducing the basic concepts of coding to beginners in an engaging, fun, and accessible way. By the end of the program, girls will have developed foundational skills in coding and problem-solving.
We’d look at:
- Understanding what coding is and why it matters
- Introduction to basic coding languages
- Hands-on exercises
- Begin to expand into more complex projects and look at designing own stories or games in small groups.
We’d also like to include a discussion on careers in technology, featuring a guest speaker from a local tech company in Birmingham.
In terms of resources we’d look at purchasing visual coding kits, and some tablets or laptops to use in groups with coding software.
We’d provide workbooks or coding guides to help run the activities and it would be run by volunteer leaders who run Brownies.
The goals of our event are:
• To introduce the Brownies to basic coding concepts in a fun, supportive environment.
• To inspire confidence in technology and coding among young girls.
• To highlight that girls can excel in coding and STEM fields, helping to break gender stereotypes.
• To provide participants with new skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity.
• To foster an interest in pursuing further STEM activities within Girlguiding and beyond.
• To encourage teamwork and communication through group coding projects.
• To connect girls with local tech professionals, offering role models and potential mentors.
