Code for Calm

Benton Park Primary School

Beschrijving Target Audience: Students with special educational needs (SEN) aged 8-11.
Dates and Duration: The club will meet once a week during the lunch break for 30 minutes, starting September 3rd September 2024 and continuing until 22th October 2024 This equates to a total duration of 240 minutes spread across 8 weeks.
We will use age-appropriate, beginner-friendly coding platforms such designed for visual learners such as Scratch Jr and OctoStudio.
Activities will focus on logic, problem-solving, and promoting creative expression through code.
The calm atmosphere will be maintained through low student-to-teacher ratios, clear instructions and tasks, along with breaks with calming activities like mindfulness exercises, if needed.
The club will be open to all students with SEN, regardless of their prior coding experience or technological background. We will adapt activities and provide additional support to ensure everyone can participate comfortably.
Technology and Coding: The program revolves entirely around learning basic coding concepts and utilizing coding platforms outside of their normal curriculum entitlement. Participation in the club will be entirely free for all students. This program specifically targets students with special needs, a group often underrepresented in coding initiatives. In order to ensure children with additional needs have the space provided this will ensure they are able to code and engage in digital outside of their normal busy learning environment. The club will run for a minimum of 240 minutes (30 minutes each session spread across 8 weeks to start with) this exceeds the minimum duration requirement.
We aim to attract at least 20 students to the club, It is important for the children attending that their aren’t too many children attending as this could exasperate overstimulation. We are happy to alternate to ensure more of the school SEN community can be involved.

"Coding for Calm" aims to provide students with SEN a safe space to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills through coding. The program seeks to:
Reduce overstimulation during the school day through a calm, structured environment.
Foster social interaction and peer-to-peer learning amongst students with SEN.
Enhance self-confidence through achievements in coding.
Introduce students with SEN to the world of technology and potential career paths.
