The aim of this workshop is to build on work we have been doing in the Community, supported by your past awards. We will run a day of access to our experts based on one-on-one help to individuals with digital issues.
We have run two badge courses this year for the Scouts covering about 60 children, 8 to 11 year olds, roughly equal split of girls and boys. These workshops cover general information about hardware and software and the web, plus they are required to make a short animation and design a character for their badge.
We allowed three, two hour sessions for getting them through this curriculum but for various reasons such as some children missing a session, we were unable to get everyone up to badge level. We want to give them an opportunity to complete their badge.
We have also on behalf of the Scottish Government been trying to help those who have no access to a computer at home, and we still have eight computers we can loan out.
Our local library was helping locals with their “How do I do this?” issues when using a computer. They have had to stop this as their hours have been cut. This is to give us a chance to support those having problems. We find that many in our community know how to use a phone, but find using a computer difficult. Using a phone with its small keyboard and screen though is difficult for many. We are a very rural area and with banks closing locally, shopping and travel sites, and medical appointments all often now on-line, we will provide help in learning how to do this safely on their devices.
So issues covered, how tech works, use of tech., coding in scratch, staying safe on-line, and loaning a computer.
The event is in Tornaveen Hall on the B9119 Aberdeen to Tarland road.
