Beschreibung
What content does the event teach? Which methods and resources are used to convey this content to the participants?
- We'll be developing the children's skills in Scratch (this is already taught in Computing lessons). The children have good skills in scratch but have never been able to apply those to hardware and to solve a challenge. The cost of this is prohibitive to the school and the children.
- The event will happen over 2 days, with the children solving a variety of challenges through programming with Scratch to control the Lego.
What are the goals of the event?
- To learn how we can control hardware using Scratch to solve problems and challenges
- To learn creativity, resilience and team work - these are 3 of our learning beahviours.
- To foster a love of technology and coding, and for the children to see that this is an job opportunity for them in the future.
Which target group are you addressing with your event?
- We will be focussing on children who are entitled to Free School Meals and who we know are vulnerable.
What makes your event special for the target group?
- The children are clever and able, but unfortunately do not have opportunities to explore and use hardware like Lego alongside Scratch. It is simply too expensive to them.
- We want these children to see that they can solve problems using coding and tech skills, and see that coding is a future pathway for them.
Is there any other relevant information for the target group, e.g. about registration?
- Our school has an average percentage of disadvantaged children, and we are really keen to help them see themselves as valued, capable, and able to do well paid, creative and technology-based jobs in the future. We find that often disadvantaged children have low aspirations, often because of a lack of experiences. We want to turn that around for them and help them see they can achieve.
As Head Teacher, my background is in software engineering. I came into teaching to make a difference for children who are disadvantaged, and have a particular passion to help them see they can acheive, particularly if they are given equal opportunities. I believe in equity, not just equality.
